Prairie Dog Mitigation Methods
We use aluminum phosphide tablets as our preferred method for controlling prairie dog populations due to their rapid effectiveness. The tablets are placed directly into the prairie dog burrows, where they react with moisture in the soil or air to release phosphine gas. Once applied, the burrow is sealed with a paper wad and covered with soil, creating an enclosed chamber. The phosphine gas acts quickly to euthanize the prairie dogs within the burrow, and under optimal soil conditions, the gas can remain active for 7 to 14 days.
CO2 cartridges are our chosen method for treating prairie dog burrows located within 100 feet of structures. After lighting the fuse, the cartridge is placed into the burrow, where it releases carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide smoke, filling the burrow system. We seal the burrows with a paper wad and cover them with soil to contain the smoke, which swiftly euthanizes the prairie dogs underground. This method is considered safe for use around occupied structures, ensuring effective control without compromising safety.
Baiting can be a highly effective method for controlling prairie dog populations, often achieving over 95% control within a treated colony. The best results are typically seen when bait is applied during the winter and early spring, when natural food sources are limited. In Colorado, baiting is legally permitted from October 1st to March 15th, though restrictions may apply until November 1st based on federal guidelines for protecting endangered species.
